Spaying and neutering your pets is an effective method of birth control consisting of removing the animal’s reproductive organs. Spaying is the procedure used for female pets and neutering generally refers to the procedure used for male pets. Through spaying or neutering, you will make your pet have a healthier, happier and longer life, as well as helping to reduce the number of dogs and cats condemned to live without homes and without love. More than twenty million cats and dogs are killed each year in the United States in pounds and shelters, or die as a result of accidents, poisoning, starvation and disease. Most of these victims are the unwanted offspring of family pets.

By spaying a female pet you will eliminate her heat (estrus) cycles, that occur twice a year in dogs and 3 or more times a year in cats. This will stop the effects of the heat cycle, including the crying, the nervous pacing of a cat in heat and the animal’s efforts to get outside to find a mate. At the same time animals will stop the bloody discharge typical of the heat that can ruin and/or stain rugs, furniture, etc., and you will stop the unwelcome visits of male pets attracted from blocks around by the scent of a female in heat.Neutering a male pet will stop his urge to roam in search of a mate. It will also reduce mounting of furniture, cushions and people’s legs by frustrated dogs and it will stop spraying in male cats.

Spaying or neutering your pet will also eliminate the chances of your dog or cat contracting one of the various diseases that can be avoided through this procedure, including breast cancer, one of the most common forms of cancer in domestic pets, prostate and uterine diseases, mastitis, ovarian cysts, miscarriages, complications in delivery, etc.

The surgical procedure for neutering or spaying your pet is a very simple one in the hands of any well trained veterinarian; the complete procedure will usually take no more than 45 minutes and it will consist of removing ovaries and uterus in females and testicles in males.
The facts that follow will help you understand the magnitude of the problem faced in the United States by the overpopulation of pets:

· Every year more than thirty million puppies and kittens are born in the USA, 2000 puppies and 3500 kittens every hour.
· Only 1 in 10 of these animals will find a permanent home.
· A dog abandoned in the street has a life expectancy of 1 year, a cat slightly longer.
· Only 20-25% of animals brought to public pounds and private shelters are adopted; the rest must be destroyed.
· If a dog or cat has 4 offspring every year (a conservative number) 2 of them female and each of these females also has 4 offspring a year, 2 of them female, by the 7th year, the original mother will have 4372 descendants!

So, spay or neuter your dog or cat and help your pet enjoy good health, happiness and a long life.
